Will’s
Story...
I grew up here at Tyrrells Court, and feel very lucky to have been
brought up in this beautiful part of Herefordshire. I have been farming
potatoes here at Tyrrells Court for the last twenty years. Most of
the potatoes I grew I supplied to supermarkets, which often left me
feeling detached – without any feedback or thanks from my end
customers. With the continual price pressure from the supermarkets,
I realised I had to change direction. I wanted to remain in farming,
and produce a great tasting product that we could make out of our
potatoes.

My aim was to produce the tastiest hand fried chips in the UK with
a pedigree – using my years of knowledge, and ability to grow
the raw product here at Tyrrells Court. I think growing the product
yourself is probably still the hardest part of the process, however,
unlike all other common chip makers who use brokers to source their
potatoes; I’m in control from seed to chip! One of the secrets
behind the delicious taste of Tyrrells crisps lies in the careful
selection of age-old potatoes. We grow mainly old varieties –
selected for their superior taste. We fry our potatoes in small batches
using our own secret, refined traditional recipe.

Our unique position as the only small chipmaker
growing our own potatoes enables us to deliver the very freshest chips
to the market.
We distribute direct to independent retailers throughout the
UK, ensuring total freshness. We are very proud of our potato chips,
so we package them in transparent bags, cushioned with air for better
transportation.

With
the idea to make potato chips, I spent Spring 2002 travelling the
world in search of the equipment and recipes I needed to make the
very best product possible. Summer 2002 was spent in one of the old
potato sheds with a small fryer making and refining the very first
packets of Tyrrells potato chips. As a result of the fantastic response
to these early chips, and as demand increased, we decided to convert
one of our own large potato stores into a modern, fully accredited
production facility.
We now have a small team here at Tyrrells, all fully trained in all
aspects of the chip-making process. Everyone enjoys being part of
a growing company and we all contribute individually to the success
of the company, and are passionate about producing real food, with
pedigree.
We
have a distinctive range of flavours
and in addition, a range of exciting seasonal flavours. We also produce
a delicious hand fried Root Vegetable range – including Parsnip
chips and Beetroot chips.
